Ruth Roman is the youngest child born to Lithuanian and Jewish parents Mary Pauline Gold (Gold) & Abraham Roman in Lynn, Massachusetts. Her father's death as a carnival barker, as a little girl She was required to support the family working both as a maid and server. Ruth was a student and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. In the midst of only two years in school the young woman left to pursue the acting career. Her path to success turned out be strewn with obstacles: in New York, she obtained a job posing for stills for a crime magazine, but theatrical work eluded her. Then, after a stint as a club hat girl, she decided to return home and quit her job. There, she made enough money by working as an usher throughout the day, and working at night with the New England Repertory Company, her first steady acting job. Her studies in drama led her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
